Complete guide to visit the Pailón del Diablo

Visiting the Pailón del Diablo is an unforgettable experience for any traveler, and the best part is that there are two distinct ways to reach this imposing waterfall, each with its own charm and perspective.

The Two Entrances to the Pailón del Diablo: Discover Two Routes to the Same Wonder

The Pailón del Diablo, located in the Río Verde parish, just minutes from the center of Baños de Agua Santa, is one of Ecuador's most impressive waterfalls. Its power, natural surroundings, and viewpoints make this place a must-see for visitors to the area.

  • Traditional Entrance (Old Route - Río Verde)

This is the most well-known and recommended route for those who want to enjoy a scenic walk surrounded by nature. The trail winds through lush vegetation, crossing hanging bridges and viewpoints that allow you to observe the Pastaza River and part of the canyon. The walk takes between 20 and 30 minutes to reach the heart of the Pailón, where visitors can feel the force of the water and take photographs from different angles.

  • New Entrance (New Pailón)

This route is shorter and more direct, ideal for those who prefer a quick visit without missing out on the main view. The access leads to a large platform located in front of the waterfall, offering a spectacular frontal perspective of the drop. Here, the sound of the water is deafening, and the refreshing mist creates an immersive experience.

Location of the Pailón del Diablo

The Pailón del Diablo is located in the picturesque town of Río Verde, just 18 kilometers from the city of Baños de Agua Santa, in the Tungurahua province of Ecuador. This impressive natural attraction is situated on the banks of the Pastaza River, in the heart of the Ruta de las Cascadas (Route of Waterfalls), one of the country's most popular journeys due to its scenic beauty and connection to the Amazonian nature.

Getting to the Pailón del Diablo is an experience in itself: the road is surrounded by mountains covered in vegetation, crystal-clear rivers, and natural viewpoints. From Baños' city center, you can take a car, a bicycle, a city bus, or a tourist chiva (open-air bus) that travels along the route to Río Verde. Upon arrival, a short stone path leads you through the cloud forest to one of Ecuador's most impressive waterfalls, where the force of the water and the energy of the surroundings create an unforgettable spectacle.
