Volunteer program at the YanaCocha Wildlife Rescue Center

The Yanacocha Rescue Center, located in the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest, has been dedicated to wildlife conservation since 2006. It rescues animals affected by illegal trafficking or voluntarily surrendered by their owners. Each animal undergoes evaluation to determine its potential for reintroduction into the wild; those that cannot be released are provided with care in environments resembling their natural habitats.

The center collaborates with the Ecuadorian Ministry of the Environment and the Environmental Police to combat wildlife trafficking and abuse. International volunteers play a crucial role in supporting its mission through animal care, conservation activities, and educational programs.

 

What to bring?

  • ✔ Work gloves.
  • ✔ Quick-dry towel.
  • ❌ DO NOT BRING drugs.
  • ✔ Swimsuit (there’s a pool!).
  • ✔ Insect repellent and sunscreen.
  • ✔ Durable and/or waterproof camera.
  • ✔ Sleeping bag and pillow (optional).
  • ✔ An open mind and a positive attitude!
  • ✔ Waterproof flashlight and extra batteries.
  • ✔ Rainwear (poncho, jacket, and rain pants).
  • ✔ Sturdy rain boots (NOT trendy, they won’t last).
  • ✔ Eco-friendly and biodegradable hygiene products.
  • ✔ Comfortable, breathable work clothes (long pants and knee-high socks are recommended).

Itinerary

Volunteer tasks

  • + Cleaning and maintenance of enclosures. 
  • + Enrichment activities to improve animal welfare. 
  • + Observation and monitoring of animal behavior. 
  • + Gardening and general maintenance of the center.
  • + Supporting larger projects, such as building enclosures. 
  • + Tasks may vary depending on the number of volunteers and the center’s needs.

Volunteers working schedule

Monday to friday

➡️ 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
➡️ 2:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m

Weekends
Volunteers work one day of their choice
(Saturday or Sunday) helping with cleaning and feeding.
The other day they work until 12:00 p.m. and then have free time.
